Dotted with impressive, mostly Renaissance and Baroque churches and palaces, Venice has, in the words of Napoleon, “the most beautiful drawing room in Europe”, namely St. Mark’s Square. At the heart of the city, this square is where you will find some of the most emblematic monuments, such as St. Mark’s Basilica (an impressive Byzantine temple), the Campanile and Doge’s Palace. Among the city’s finest palaces are the Ca’ d’Oro, the Ca’ Rezzonico (a spectacular Baroque building which houses the Venice Museum of Baroque) and the Fortuny Palace (which houses the museum dedicated to famous Spanish painter Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo). The Santa María della Salute Basilica is a prime example of Baroque religious architecture, located on the banks of the Grand Canal. Others, such as the Santa María Gloriosa dei Frari Basilica, the San Giorgio Maggiore Basilica and the San Giovanni e Paolo Church, are famous for housing works by Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese.
Once you have visited the centre’s main attractions, including the famous Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs, head to the Canareggio neighbourhood (where the old Jewish Quarters used to be) and the Dorsoduro neighbourhood, home to the Vernier dei Leoni Palace, and the impressive Peggy Guggenheim modern art collection. The palace’s balconies offer stunning views of the Grand Canal and, if you haven’t already succumbed to the temptation, this scenery will make you want to jump straight into a gondola or vaporetto boat.
