However, possibly the best work of art Munich has to offer can be found two hours from the city, in the form of Neuschwanstein Castle. Built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who was known as the ‘crazy king’, in the middle of a forest surrounded by mountains, the castle, on which Walt Disney based his ‘Sleeping Beauty castle’, is visited by over 1.3 million people every year.
