Menorca is the spectacular, yet much more crowded island of Majorca’s counterpart. It is a smaller, more tranquil island, with a population of around 90,000 inhabitants, and is perfect for a family holiday, combining trips to paradisiacal coves and beaches with interesting cultural visits. The bays of Turqueta, Macarella, Pregonda, Porter, Mitjana and Es Talaier are just a few of the island’s gems, reminiscent of the Caribbean.
If you want to take in the island from a higher elevation, Mount Toro awaits you. At 358 metres, this is the highest point of Menorca, offering a panoramic view of the entire island and, on a clear day, Majorca. For a long stroll through nature, head to S’Albufera des Grau, Menorca’s most important park, which spans over 5,000 hectares and is home to hundreds of species of flora and fauna. A date with history awaits you at Fort Marlborough. Built by the British between 1710 and 1726, this was one of the most important buildings during the battle between Spain, Great Britain and France for the possession of Menorca, with a goal to obtaining the Mediterranean domain.
If you’re hungry after all the sightseeing, be sure to sample the typical Menorcan dish of lobster stew. You’ll find the best of the best in Fornell, a fishing village in the north of the island. Once refreshed, wander through the Ciudadela, Menorca’s second city after it’s capital, Mahón. This beautiful and majestic town is a web of narrow alleyways, boasting impressive hundred-year-old monuments and the island’s most emblematic port.
Your visit wouldn’t be complete without a cocktail in Cova d'en Xoroi, possibly the most visited place in Menorca. Located in a cliff on the island’s south coast, in the residential area of Cala en Porter, the cave has several terraces and lookouts on different levels, offering spectacular views. Today, it is a music bar by day and a nightclub by night, but, according to legend, it served as a refuge to Xoroi, a victim of a shipwreck.
