Located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, León is a beautiful feudal city. This UNESCO World Heritage site‘s historical and monumental heritage, combined with its location along the Camino de Santiago walking route, make for a destination that is closely linked to Catholicism and visited by a multitude of tourists. Must-see monuments include the Cathedral, a perfect example of classical Gothic French-style architecture in Spain, the San Isidoro Basilica, one of the country’s most important Romanesque churches, considered ‘the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque Art’, and the San Marcos Monastery, a prime example of Spanish Plateresque and Renaissance architecture. If you want to enjoy the green landscapes that characterise the north of Spain, you’re in luck, as León provides its inhabitants with the most green zones of any Spanish city (2,196,542 m² in total). The most important of its many parks is the Ribera del Bernesga. Running parallel to the river, the park is dotted with modern sculptures, bandstands and a variety of trees, including white maples, cypress trees, junipers, Indian chestnuts, and elms. After a stroll through this natural oasis, head to the Húmedo neighbourhood, León’s historical centre and home to a vast array of places offering the best culinary specialities the region has to offer, such as Cecina de León, Maragato stew, trout soup, chilled or fried trout and roasted lamb. This neighbourhood is the most typical of León, characterised by its narrow alleyways and Medieval squares, which are worthy of a pilgrimage.
