Hassan II is the city’s impressive main mosque, located on Boulevard Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah. It is the tallest Muslim temple in the world and the second largest, after the mosque in Mecca. The historical centre, Old Medina, is surrounded by walls built in the 16th century and lined with street vendors selling food, clothes and other discounted items. Don’t miss the must-see monuments such as the Bab Jédid and Bab Marrakech doors, the Sidi Kairouani sanctuary, the Scala, a bastion of the 18th century, and the Ould el Hamra and Dar El Makhzen mosques. Two kilometres from the centre, you will find New Medina, a pretty and tranquil area that is less frequented by tourists, designed by French architects in 1923, which houses a large selection of bookshops. Between Old Medina and the modern shopping area, you will find the beautiful and majestic Mohammed V square, surrounded by amazing Mudejar-style buildings, such as the Palace of Justice, the French Consulate and the Prefecture.
If you are looking for a place to relax by the water before going out for a drink and a dance, look no further than La Corniche, the city’s promenade. Punctuating the long stretch is the charming El Hank lighthouse, which guides boats to the coast and reminds us that ‘we’ll always have Casablanca…’
