The capital of the ‘Beautiful Island’, Santa Cruz de La Palma is a beautiful and charming Colonial city, founded in 1493 under the name ‘Villa Apurón’. It is located in the eastern part of La Palma island, where the lava of an old volcanic crater used to flow, now known as the Caldereta. The city enjoys a comfortable climate year-round, despite trade winds causing the sky to be frequently overcast.

Its beautiful Old Town is home to palaces, Colonial houses, traditional Canary Island architecture and a plethora of churches. Worthy of mention is the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Snow, at the peak of a mountainous area, where a hundred-year-old traditional festival, involving the descent of the patron saint into the town centre, takes place every 5th of August.

On the promenade, you will find Santa Catalina Castle, built in the 16th century to defend the city. Square in shape, its doorway has a lowered arch, where the royal armouries are displayed. This castle can only be visited from the outside.
