With an altitude of 800 metres above sea level and only 15 kilometres from the Caribbean Sea, the capital of Venezuela enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year, which you too can enjoy by taking one of our cheap flights to Caracas.
Despite being a large cosmopolitan city, one of its main tourist attractions is the Waraira Rapano National Park. Located on a coastal mountain range, 2,675 metres above sea level, this impressive natural park is the largest and is known as the city’s main ‘lung’. You can stroll through the various woods, take the cable car up to the peak of Mount Ávila and visit the little village of Galipán. Be sure to stop by one of the restaurants to enjoy a typical dish of Caracas, such as a black Creole roast, arepa corn cakes or pabellón criollo (made with white rice, black beans, fried plantain and shredded meat).
Back in the city, visit the Simón Bolívar birthplace house, where the Liberator was born in 1783, and now houses a museum dedicated to the political and military hero. Be sure to visit the Quinta de Anauco, one of the city’s most beautiful homes built in 1797, which is now home to Caracas’ Museum of Colonial Art.
Two less typical tourist attractions are the University City of Caracas, a masterpiece in architecture and urban planning, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO, and the town of El Hatillo. El Hatillo is a small, picturesque town located 15 kilometres from Caracas in the State of Miranda, established over 215 years ago, which houses some beautiful examples of colonial architecture. Its enviable climate and vast array of shops and cafes make it the perfect host to the International Music Festival of Hatillo, held every year in October or November, with a large variety of ballet and dance shows, theatre, art exhibitions and all types of concerts. It’s the perfect way to enjoy the arts of Caracas away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
