More information from Alicante
Bathed in Mediterranean waters, Alicante boasts a wealth of monuments and museums, as well as the ideal climate to enjoy its beautiful beaches and dreamy island of Tabarca, just off the city’s coast. Also accessible from Santa Pola and Benidorm, Tabarca has paradise beaches with crystal clear water, as well as a picturesque port. Beautiful 18th-century walls, built by King Carlos III, surround its town centre. To finish off your visit, don’t forget to try ‘caldero’, the island’s typical stewed fish dish.
Back in Alicante, there is much to see and do, including a trip up to Santa Barbara castle. Located at the peak of Mount Benacantil, at an elevation of 166 meters, the castle is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain and provides a perfect lookout over the bay of Alicante. If heights aren’t your thing, you can enjoy the stunning views from the city’s charming Paseo de la Explanada promenade, or visit Las Cigarreras contemporary culture centre, a converted old tobacco factory which now serves as a first-class artistic and cultural space.
