More information from Santander
Take one of our cheap flights to Santander and discover a bourgeois city, which combines urban landscapes with stunning beaches and numerous green spaces, typical to the north of Spain. Built around a large natural port, which has been active since before the Roman Empire, some of its most popular, beautiful areas are the Matalañas, the beaches of El Sardinero and La Magdalena Peninsula. This is one of the most beautiful areas in the city, where you will find La Magdalena Palace (King Alfonso XIII’s summer residence), La Magdalena Beach (close to Peligros Beach), Bikini Beach, the three caravels used by Cantabrian seafarer Vital Alsar to commemorate Francisco de Orellana’s voyage in the Pacific Ocean, and a small, free zoo, home to ducks, penguins and seals.
Santander was transformed into an exclusive spa resort in the early 19th century, and boasts beautiful Belle Époque buildings, such as the Hotel Real, the Grand Casino and the Bellavista Hippodrome. Not far from the city is the southern shore of Santander Bay and the coastal strip leading to the mouth of the River Pas, which has some of the best beaches in Cantabria.
For a stroll through nature, head to the Liencres Dunes Natural Park, the most extensive range of dunes on the whole Cantabrian coastline, and the Cabarga Peak, which offers an impressive panoramic view of the city. Located on its slopes, the Cabarceno Natural Park is the largest animal park in Europe, housing tigers, elephants, giraffes and hippos in such large enclosures that they appear to be roaming free!
