Another of the city’s impressive monuments is the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and is the spiritual centre of the Russian Orthodox Church, housing the Trinity Icon, a work by famous Medieval iconography artist, Andréi Rubliov. In addition to Medieval and Renaissance architecture, Moscow houses prime examples of Soviet architecture, such as the group of Stalinist skyscrapers, nicknamed the ‘Seven Sisters’, and the exquisitely decorated Moscow Metro system, which Lenin called ‘the People’s Palace’.
