Once in Costa Rica, a visit to its capital is inevitable, as all of the country’s roads and communication paths converge here. The city still exhibits traces of its colonial past, particularly in the Old Town, and boasts several interesting monuments, including the National Theatre. Built at the end of the 19th century, modelled on the Opera in Paris, this is one of San José’s main attractions.
Worthy of mention among its many museums is the pre-Columbian Gold ‘Álvaro Vargas Echeverría’ museum. Located at the heart of the city, in an underground building underneath Culture Square, it houses an important collection of gold objects, which reflect the world view, social structure and goldsmith traditions of pre-Columbian villages, which used to occupy what is now the territory of Costa Rica.
Other must-sees are the Jade Museum, and the ‘National’, which serves as a museum of natural history, anthropology, archaeology and history. The city offers several open green spaces and places of interest just outside the city, such as Carthage and the Irazú Volcano National Park.
