Nestled between the Andean volcanoes of Pichincha, Antisana, Cotopaxi and Cayambe, 2,800 metres above sea level, the Ecuadorian capital is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich cities in Latin America. Its enormous old town spans over 320 hectares, making it the largest on the American continent. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1978, the old town of Quito boasts an array of churches, chapels and Colonial monasteries and convents, as well as squares, museums, Republican buildings and interesting examples of early 20th century architecture.
